Races Report by Richie Barry
[16-May-2010]
Date:
16/05/2010, Location: Whitechurch, Co. Cork
This was a big day for the
club as it played host to A2/A3/A4 and underage riders from
throughout the country. The weather was excellent and the sun shone throughout
the day making it a change from the usual Whitechurch weather- that
is rain. The underage racing began at 12 and provided some exciting
racing. Turnout was good for the underage which was encouraging to
see. If these races were anything to go by the senior races should
provide some exciting racing.
First off was the a2/a3 combined race. Richie Barry was the only
Barrs rider in the race and was the only hope for a result for the
host club. The race was active in the beginning and Richie dug hard to
cover any possible breakaway moves. Unfortunately he missed the move
of the day containing four riders including Cycling Ireland President
Rory Wyley. With a headwind on the climb of the day the race turned
out to be fairly negative once the break had gone and any attempts to
get across were quickly shut down. There were still 4 places to race
for coming into the finish but Richie ran out of gas and had to be
content with a bunch finish.
The second race was the A4 race containing 2 club riders, Keith Lane
and Colin Braham. This was Keiths first race since returning from
injury and it was also Colin's first race of the season. Both rode
well and finished comfortably in the bunch which was a positive
result for both riders and bodes well for future races.
Finally a mention must be given to all the club members who
sacrificed racing to help out in the organisation of the day. Russell
Treacy must be congratulated as race director on the excellent
running of the event. All club riders who marshalled and brought
refreshments also deserve a mention as without them giving up their
time the event would not have been made possible. Overall, even
though the riders missed out on the results, the event was a success
for the host club.

Silver Pail G.P. Race [30-April-2010]
Date:
25/04/10, Location: Fermoy
There was a strong Barrs team lined up for
today's race at Fermoy and all were ready to light
it up when the racing began. Today also turned out to be the first wet
race of the season although it didn't bother the riders too much.
Lining up in the A3 race were Russell Treacy, Pat Ahern, Fiona Meade,
Stephen Butler, and Richie Barry. The race started at a lively pace
with attacking from the start. Russell made the first notable break
of the race and got away in a group of 3 halfway around the first
lap. They stayed away until the start finish line. This seemed to be
the tone for today's race. Riders would attack, be brought back, and
attack again and no real significant break would get away. The Barrs
riders were constantly active trying to force the winning break, and
were riding aggressively every lap. Any move that went there was
always the blue and orange jersey of St. Finbarrs up there. Try as
they might none of the lads could get away although it wasn't through
lack of trying. All look set for a bunch sprint and that’s what
it turned out to be. With 800m to go Richie hit the front to push it
along for Pat and Russell. Pat went early with 350 m to go and shot
past Richie. All was looking good for his second win of the season
but he was just pipped at the line and ended up third. Russell put in
another good gallop finishing 8th and Fiona ended up as first lady.
Both Stephen and Richie finished comfortably in the bunch.
The Barrs were also represented in the A4 race by John Twomey and
Maurice Lawlor. The lads avoided the crashes and stayed up well in
the bunch. A break of two got away and it was these riders that would
contest the finish. Back in the Bunch it was John Twomey who put in
an excellent sprint to lead the bunch home and grab third place with
Maurice finishing safely in the bunch.
All in all another good day for the team collecting 4 prizes in
total. Bring on the Corkman!

Tommy Sheehan Memorial Race. Report
by Richie Barry [21-Apr-2010]
Date: 18/04/10 Location: Carrick on
Suir
What a
day for a race! Sun shining and nice and warm. Four Finbarrs riders
competed today all in the A3 race. The race consisted of 3 laps of
the Kearney's
road circuit in Carrick on Suir. Representing the club were Fiona,
Stephen, Pat, and Richie. The race started out at a steady pace all
waiting for the climb of Kearney's
road. Pat was activie in the begging of the race before the climb
attacking several times. As Pat was brought back just after the
hairpin on the climb Richie gave it a go. He was brought back before
the top and the pace stayed steady. Two riders (Pat Kenealy and
Brendan McGloughlan) escaped and got a maximum lead of 1min 40. When
this information was relayed to the bunch Pat and Richie led the
chase and took back twenty seconds before the second ascent of the
climb. The second time up the climb was where the pace really ramped
up. A group of 12 containing Pat and Richie split from the bunch and
caught the break over the top of the climb. This group had the
potential to go all the way to the finish but with many riders
refusing to work it was brought back and the bunch formed again,
although diminished to about 30 riders containing all St. Finbarrs
riders. The third time up the climb the pace was hard but steady.
Conor O'Shea (Killorglan) attacked and was followed by Thomas Lavery
(Comeragh). These riders forged a gap of thirty seconds which proved
to be enough to take them to the finish. Fiona got tailed (along with
many others) on the final climb but Pat, Stephen, and Richie were in
the main group of about 20. With 1.5 Km to go Richie attacked and got
a brief gap but was brought back 500 m before the line. Pat put in
another good sprint and came third in the bunch gallop taking 6th in
the race, with Stephen and Richie finishing in the main group.
Overall
another good race for Team Finbarrs which continues their good
season. Only two races in which they have competed in have failed to
bring a result for a Barrs rider which shows what a start to the
season the team have made.

Gorey Three Day Race. Report
by Richie Barry [06-Apr-2010]
Date: 03/04/2010 to 05/04/2010
Location: Gorey, Co. Wexford
Stage
1: Brittas- Gorey: 70 miles/110km
The day was cold but sunny and a full
field of 200 riders set out to race the 44th Gorey 3 day (second
oldest stage race in Ireland).
Representing the club were Russell Treacy, Pat Ahern, and Richie
Barry. Pete Barber and Sarah must also be given a mention as they
lined up to provide invaluable support the lads throughout the race.
Stage one started in Brittas going through Blessington, Hacketstown,
Carnew, finishing on the Enniscorthy
Road outside Gorey, 70 miles in total.
The race started fast as always, with a tailwind aiding the bunch.
The lads stayed in the first half of the bunch avoiding any danger.
Over the steep climb Hacketstown Pat Aherne attacked and formed a
group of 15 just over the top. In the bunch Russell and Richie
followed the chase and the lineout over the top tested the legs which
the lads got through without too much trouble. Down the decent the
group was caught and the main hazard was avoiding the many riders who
had punctured. The bunch split again over the top of the climb at
Carnew with all 3 team members making the group of 30. The split came
back together and from there a bunch finish seemed likely and thats
what it turned out to be. Pat managed tenth in the gallop just
missing out on a placing. Russell and Richie finished comfortably in
the bunch which had been reduced from 200 to 75 riders.
Results G.C.: Pat Ahern- 10th, Russell
Treacy 25th, Richie Barry 65th, all same time.
Team G.C. : St Finbarrs: 3rd
Stage 2: Eniscorthy Road I.T.T.: 4 miles/7km
The lads started the T.T. from
11:56-11:59. By this time the sun was shining and the slight tailwind
aided the later starters which included the 3 lads. Russell, Pat, and
Richie blitzed the course and all put in times to move them up in
contention for G.C. and team G.C. Pat was fastest clocking
7'40", with Richie next at 7'45", and Russell with
8'04". These were good for 9th, 16th and 26th places in the
stage.
Results G.C. : Pat Ahern- 5th, Richie
Barry-11th, Russell Treacy- 25th
Team G.C.: St. Finbarrs : 2nd at
38"
Stage 3: Gorey-Gorey 60 miles/100 km
Stage three was a 15mile/25km lap around
Gorey that was raced four times with a category three climb every
lap. With a tailwind on the main road and a headwind on the climb, a
bunch finish seemed likely but in bike racing you can never tell.
Russell grabbed the initiative in the first lap and made the early
breakaway group. Crossing the start finish line the group of 12 had a
minute. Back in the bunch the pace was manageable and the climb
proved to be of little difficulty for the lads. The pace picked up
towards the end of the second lap and crossing the line the break had
only 14 seconds. Going past the monument in the town the bunch
stalled and the gap to the break went out once more to around 30 seconds.
Turning onto the main road once more the break was caught and the
bunch was all back together.A few attacks were attempted but the
bunch kept all breakaways under control and on the final lap with
10km to go it was all back together. At 8 km a small group of 4
attempted a break and forged a lead of 20 seconds. With 2 km to go
the pace picked up in the bunch and the four riders were caught on
the line which left the G.C. unchanged. All looked to be going very
well for the team ahead of the final stage. The placing on Team G.C.
was more impressive considering the fact that the team had the
minimum number of 3 riders to be entered in this classification (And
were 30" ahead of favourites Team Isle of Man).
Results G.C.: Pat Ahern: 5th, Richie Barry-
11th, Russell Treacy- 25th.
Team G.C.: St Finbarrs- 2nd at 38"
Stage 4: Gorey-Brittas: 55miles/92km
The final day and the platform was set
for a strong result for the team. The lads were feeling good and the
support provided by Sarah and Pete brought more confidence to the
team. The day started overcast but warm and the bunch had a strong
tailwind (Near Gale Force) which turned to tail/crosswind at places.
With such a wind once again a bunch finish was a likely outcome
however this is bike racing and its unpredictable. The stage started
quietly and it was steady in the bunch. Russell was once again in the
early break which built a maximum lead of just over 45 seconds. The
stage contained one category three climb which on paper shouldn't
have caused too much trouble in the bunch. It was here that the
breakaway group was caught and everything was back together. However
before here the pace shot up and the bunch split on climb with one
third forming the front the group and the back 2 thirds around 15-20
seconds back. This was problematic for Pat and Richie as they got
caught napping too far back and missed the split. This could have
been disastrous but some hard riding at the front of the group by
other riders, Pat and Richie included closed the gap. From here the
stage proved to be hard and fast with very little rest in the bunch.
Lineout after lineout really tested the lads strength and will after
the previous leg sapping days. At the front of the bunch a group of
14 riders slipped away including the yellow jersey. This put the lads
G.C. placings in danger, and also the team placing. Try as they might
the lads couldn't get it going and the high speed of the bunch wasn't
enough to close the gap. Unfortunately this meant that all three lost
time in G.C. and ended up outside of the Team Placing.
Final Result G.C.: Pat Ahern- 19th,
Richie Barry-25th, Russell Treacy 39th.
Team G.C.: 4th.
Prizes: Pat Ahern- top 20 in G.C. Richie
Barry 1st unplaced A3. Russell Treacy 2nd unplaced Vet.
All in all this weekend must be
considered a good one for the team, even though they were
dissappointed with the final stage and not maintaining what was up to
then their excellent placings. However on reflection it was an
excellent race for St. Finbarrs who proved they are among the
strongest riders in the A2 and A3 category this season. Thanks must
be given to the Maldron Hotel in Kingswood
who allowed Pat and Richie to leave cars there over the weekend once
again to Sarah and Pete who provided excellent service, and the race
organisers who were excellent as always. The biggest thank you of all
must given to Mags and Iain of the B&B in Gorey who were
excellent hosts and went out of their way to look after all of us.

Ras Luimni Race. Report
by John Twomey and Russell Treacy [29-Mar-2010]
Date: 28/03/10
Location: Caherconlish, Co. Limerick
Another
great day for St. Finbarrs CC in the Ras Luimni A3 race with Pat
Ahern finishing third and Russell Treacy finishing ninth. The
early season popularity of road racing in Munster showed no sign of easing
yesterday with a huge sign-on of 212 competitors. Only four St.
Finbarrs riders made the trip to Limerick;
Pat Ahern, Russell Treacy, Fiona Meade and Stephen Butler, all of
whom raced in the A3 Category. The race comprised of three laps
of the well-known 25km loop around Caherconlish village. Despite
several early attempts at a breakaway it wasn’t until the start
of the third lap that the decisive break of 12 riders was
successful. The winning attack had two St. Finbarrs riders; Russell
Tracy and Pat Ahern. The lead group successfully held of the chasing
bunch thanks to the effort put in by Russell at the front
in the last 5km and this secured two placings for the club on
the results sheet. Brendan McLoughlin (Blarney CC) proved strongest
in the last few metres with Pat Ahern taking third place for another
excellent result. Russell Treacy capped another great day for the
team finishing in ninth place, Fiona Meade and Stephen Butler
finished safely in the main bunch.
So the excellent start
to the season continues for St. Finbarrs, with the first stage races
next weekend in Gorey and Ras Mumhan. Best of luck to all
competing, over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend in their respective
races.

Minane Bridge Race. Report
by Richie Barry [23-Mar-2010]
Date: 21/03/10 Location:
Minane Bridge
What a day!
It was an unforgettable race. Narrow roads, steep climb and descents,
it was as close as any of us will get to a Belgian Classic.
The
bunch was split into 3 groups at the start. The A4 group were given 3
minutes over the A3 group who were given 3 minutes over the A2 bunch.
The A3 group started of strongly and worked well to try and keep the
gap. The severity of the circuit was seen almost immediately when
riders were dropping of the group on the first lap and when the A3
group began collecting the dropped riders from the A4 bunch.
Just
after the start of the second lap the A2 group caught the A3 group
and this was when the s@*t hit the fan. Up the climb the second time
the group was reduced to 30 riders and the remains of the A4 group
were caught halfway around the lap. From there on it was a war of
attrition. Riders were constantly going out the back on a circuit
which provided very little rest bite. As much as the climb was
proving difficult, through Nohoval the pressure was always kept on.
The descents
provided some respite but concentration had to be kept due to the
very high speeds being reached on the narrow roads (45mph!). It was
on this second lap and the start of the third where the break of the
day went. Two riders (Timmy Barry & Andrew Aherne) got a gap and
stayed away until the finish where Timmy won comfortably. Back in the
bunch the remaining laps were vicious. The pressure was kept on the
whole time and the group was diminishing each lap. The team had three
riders left in the group starting the final lap (Russell Treacy,
Richie Barry, and James Lynch). However the final time up the climb
Russell and Richie were tailed off suffering from cramp, and James
was the only man left to contest the remaining prizes.
James
went on to finish in the top 15 which was an excellent result
considering the severity of the race. Russell and Richie both
finished in the top 20 in a race where more dropped out than
completed the race. All in all not too bad a day where the team
proved they are among the strongest of the A3s at the moment. Next
stop is Gorey where Pat, Russell and Richie will be representing the
club!

Pat Ahern wins in Carrick On Suir. Report
by Richie Barry [18-Mar-2010]
Well
today certainly turned out to be Patricks Day! That is Patrick as in
Pat Ahern who took a great win in the a3/a4 race.
The race
started with 12km neutralised section and it was from there the
racing began. Coming around the start finish line for the second time
a small group attempted to get away with Pat Ahern representing the
club. This was brought back and then it was Richie Barry's turn to
give it a go. On the short steep climb about 1/4 of the way around
the circuit he attacked and went away with Stephen McNamara (Clonmel
cc). The two got a gap of 30 seconds but were brought back by the
bunch after 5km.
Next
came an attack by Russell Treacy 3/4 of the way around the lap and he
got a brief gap before being brought back. However it was on the bell
that the decisive break of the day went away. Pat attacked and a
group of 5 formed over the top of the climb. Russell Treacy then went
across with 3 other riders which formed the break of 9 that would go
on to compete the finish. This group got a gap of 1min 45 and were
never in danger of being caught once away.
Up the
final climb it was Brendan McLaughlin (Blarney)
who led out the sprint and Pat came around with just under 100m to go
to take the win. Russell ended up 6th in the group. Back in the bunch
there was one place left to race for and Richie Barry attacked
through the Town with 1.5 km to go. He got a gap but was caught 3/4
the way up the climb and John Murphy (Fermoy cc) took the final
placing.
All in
all a great day for Team Finbarrs and long may this great start to
the season continue!
Banteer Race Report by Cronan O
Doibhlin [17-Mar-2010]
A
full squad of St. Finbarr’s riders participated in the 9th
Annual Mick Cahill Memorial Cycle Race promoted by Banteer Cycling
Club on Sunday, 14th March. Liam Ryan and Eldon Looney opened their
season account in the A1/A2 race and both finished safely in the
bunch with Liam Ryan finishing strongly.
In the A3/A4 race, racing
ended early for Fiona Meade who had a mechanical problem on the first
lap. The A4 and handicapped A3 groups came together in a bunch
of almost 130 riders towards the end of lap 1. St
Finbarr’s riders were prominent in early attempts to get away,
with successive attacks from Russell Tracey, Richie Barry and Cronan
O Doibhlin. Finally Pat Ahern and James Lynch made the
jump to what was to be the successful breakaway group in the third
lap. With 2 riders up the road, the rest of the team were
content to hold out for the possibility of a bunch sprint. The
lead group held a gap of 30 seconds until the last kms of the final
lap when the main bunch began to close. Pat Ahern was
the first club man across the line for the second week in a row with
a well deserved 3rd place, followed by James Lynch just
outside the placings. Russell Tracey, Cronan O Doibhlin John
Twomey and Richie Barry rode hard up the final drag into Banteer
village and finished hard on the heels of the break as the first few
riders of the main bunch across the line. Another fine weekends
racing and good team performance, which all makes for an exciting
season at this early point.
Starting Team; Liam Ryan,
Eldon Looney, Fiona Meade, Pat Ahern, James Lynch, Russell Tracey,
Richard Barry, Cronan O Doibhlin, Maurice Lawlor and John Twomey.

Report from
Cronan O Doibhlin
I went last
year and had a fantastic week doing 500 miles in 7 days in
temperatures of 21+C. I have been to Majorca on a number of occasions and
can say that the trip and training runs with Sportactive were superb
– best that I have been on. There are 5-6 levels per week
from International Elite to Leisure, and the routes are demanding
– plenty of climbs if you are preparing for Gorey and the Group
leaders will take you to your limit without over doing things.
Each day has an early 9.30am start and usually finishes at about 2pm
so you will have the rest of the day to relax in the Spa or sightsee
– whatever. The Hotel Estrella de mar & Spa is 4 star
– food is excellent and plenty of it – and there are
facilities for children and families. The package is €480
half board with transfer (not including flights).
Proposed dates
are 6-13 Mar, 20-27 Mar, and 27 – 3 Apr (with Sean Kelly).
